Carifesta IX, in collaboration with the Laventille Steelband Festival Foundation, presented the 8 of Hearts Steelband Concert on Sunday 24th September, 2006, at the Angostura Limited Compound in Laventille. This event was one of the better events of the Carifesta IX series because it was efficiently organized and the production was tight and fast flowing much to the satisfaction of the audience.
The event began with an invocation by Mr. Owen Serette who had warmly blessed the occasion. However, the mood briefly became somber when he had informed the crowd of Mr. Lincoln Delgado Noel’s passing earlier that day. He briefly outlined the outstanding contribution of Mr. Noel and requested a minute of silence in condolence of him.
Immediately after were the presentations by the eight bands scheduled to perform. They were: RBTT Sound Settlers, TCL Skiffle Bunch, BP Renegades, WITCO Desperadoes, Sagicor Exodus, PCS Starlift Steel Orchestra, Neal and Massy Trinidad All Stars and the reigning champions of Panorama, Phase II Pan Groove.
Artistes featured in the 8 of Hearts Steelband Concert were: Ms. Petunia Thomas, violinist Mr. Anslem Walters, H20 Flo, St. Augustine Chamber Orchestra, guitarist Mr. Michael Bookman and limbo dancers.
All the artistes performed exceptionally well, but without a doubt, Mr. Anslem Walters performance on the violin stole the show. This accomplished violinist who had received training by his father since the age of six had successfully blended his instrument with the sounds of the TCL Skiffle Bunch Steelband Orchestra to create a unique and fantastic sound which had the audience on their feet.
Indeed, the audience was fully appreciative of this first-rate steelpan concert which took place out of the Carnival season and it was arguably one of the best productions in terms of organization and planning for the year thus far.
