The National Council of Indian Culture presented the Fruta Teen Queen Pageant on Sunday 15th October, 2006. The crowning of the Miss Divali Nagar has become a common feature in the Divali Nagar celebrations and was certainly a very entertaining segment in the nine days of festivities. The girls were dressed in exquisite Indian wear which was truly breathtaking. They elegantly strutted on stage with great poise and represented their sponsors, their schools and their communities with pride.

Before the start of the pageant, the evening began with Sai Bhajans, followed by several other acts such as a classical Indian dance performance by the Sharda School of Dance and the pulsating rhythm of the Malik All Stars Tassa Group.

The Acting President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Linda Baboolal, arrived midway through the show and was accompanied by a troupe of tassa drummers. In her address to the gathering, Dr. Baboolal expressed that the Divali celebrations is an event that continues to expand its scope year after year. Over the years, she said, the message of Divali, which is lightness over darkness and goodness over evil, is symbolized by the lighting of the deya in hope that it would also bring light and happiness into the lives of all. Because everyone, regardless of their race or social standing are involved in the lighting of deyas, this, according to the Acting President, is an indication that we could all live together in peace and unity.

Also, Dr. Baboolal mentioned that more and more people in the West understand how the practices of the East are valid and can be used in everyday life. For example, yoga which has become increasingly popular in the last century, has been adopted by many all over the world. Dr. Baboolal’s final prayer for the night was that we do not let our society fall into the evils of discrimination, hate and violence but to let the light of Divali shine and bring love throughout the world.

After the short speech, tokens of appreciation were presented to Dr. Baboolal on behalf of the NCIC and the main sponsor of the night, Fruta.

Other grand performances of the night were by the Susan Mohip Dance Group, the Sharda School of Dance from Guyana, the Sargam International Indian Orchestra and songs by Susan Mohip, Rohan Boodoogroup, Dr. Winston Tolan and Dr. Beni Balkaran.

The night was broken up into two segments where the girls showcased their Indian wear twice. Each gown glowed and glimmered along with their brilliant smiles that were showcased throughout the night.

In the second half, the girls reintroduced themselves and said a bit more about their academic and social achievements. Although a few girls forgot some lines of what they rehearsed, the other girls were able to pull off their lines successfully.

After the judges had tabulated the scores and before they were announced, the contestants were serenaded by the winner of Mastana Bahar 2006, Neval Chaitlal.

Finally, the results for the Miss Divali Nagar Fruta Teen Queen Pageant were released. The crowning of the new queen was done by Miss Divali Nagar 2005, Farisha Yathali, who gave up her crown for the new queen to fulfill her duties. The results are as follows: the 2nd runner-up position went to Miss Samantha Gayapersad, the 1st runner-up position went to Miss Shridevi Bissoondial and the winner of the Fruta Divali Teen Queen 2006 went to Miss Asha Lal. We await to see who would wear the crown next year at the Fruta Divali Teen Queen 2007.
