PoS Corporation City Day 2006 Civic Reception

June 26, 2006, marked the 92nd anniversary of the restoration of the Municipal Authority to the City of Port of Spain. Formal celebrations took place at the City Hall in Port of Spain which was beautifully arranged by members of the Port of Spain City Corporation.

The night's proceedings began with the National Anthem played on the steelpan by Akino Guild of the Trinity All Generation School of the Arts followed by welcoming remarks by Acting Chief Executive Officer of the City of Port of Spain, Mrs. Lorraine Alexander.

His Worship, Alderman Murchison Brown, the Mayor of the City of Port of Spain gave the opening address and spoke widely about the government's 20/20 Vision Plan for Trinidad and Tobago.

The feature address presented by the Honourable Mr. Martin Joseph, the Minister of National Security and Rehabilitation on behalf of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, the Honourable Mr. Patrick Manning also spoke at length of the aim to improve the Port of Spain area in line with the Vision 20/20 Plan.

The drive to improve the main city of Port of Spain and environs falls into this category of development (Vision 20/20) with plans for the improvement to drainage networks, the upgrading of roads, a much needed facelift to building structures in the vicinity and the maintenance and restoration of historical sites.

Other goals set by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago for the year 2020 are for the completion of the Water Front Project, the construction of a 1,200 unit car park in the main city and the construction of the Breakfast Shed which has already been completed. In essence, the objective of the government of Trinidad and Tobago is to make the city of Port of Spain the financial hub of the Caribbean and for the twin-island state to reach ‘developed' status by 2020.

Entertainment to commemorate the auspicious occasion was provided by reigning Calypso Monarch, Mr. Morel "Luta" Peters who sang the popular and well-received hits, "Check the Foundation" and "Kaiso Kaiso", dances by Michael Fortune and Tracy Salvary of the Rhythm and Style Dance Company followed by another dance by members of the full entourage and a song, "My Soul's Desire" by Mrs. Peeche De Coteau-Greaves, an employee of the Public Health Department in the Corporation. The Belmont Hi Larks Steel Orchestra also serenaded the guests at the close of the formal half of the event.

Presentation of Awards were offered in the areas of business, community service, culture, education, religion, service to the Port of Spain Corporation and sports. The awardees are as follows: in the area of business, awards went to CLICO, NEDCO and T&TEC; in the area of community service, the award went to the Girl Guides Association of Trinidad and Tobago; in the area of culture, awards went to Patrick Brown and Andrew Emmanuel Constant; in the area of education, the award went to Stefan Lashley; in the area of religion, awards went to the All Saints Anglican Church, St John's (London) Baptist Church and Woodbrook Pentecostal Church; in the area of service to the Port of Spain Corporation, awards went to Lennox Cordner and Leroy Williams and in the area of sport, awards went to Noella Chin, Dr. Iva Gordon and the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board.

Presentations of these awards were done by His Worship, Alderman Murchison Brown, the Mayor of the City of Port of Spain, the acting President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Linda Baboolal, the wife of the Minister of National Security and Rehabilitation, Mrs. Joseph and the Minister of National Security and Rehabilitation, the Honourable Mr. Martin Joseph.

In addition, delegates from Port of Spain and its immediate surroundings were presented on stage for the audience to witness the participants of the Port of Spain pageant as well as for their further entertainment.

At the end of it all, the occasion was well put together and was held at an appropriate venue that was brilliantly decorated. The programme was tight and flowed well and guests of the event left with a feeling of satisfaction and with hope of great things to come.
