On the 8th of August, 2007, the Mayor of Port of Spain, Murchison Brown, and his councillors had their terms of office extended by one year in a brief swearing-in ceremony at the Councillor Chambers, City Hall in Port of Spain.

Ten councillors and two aldermen took their declaration of acceptance of office and the oath of office. The terms of the councilors and aldermen expired on June 15th, 2007, but as local government elections were not held this year, these terms have been extended to June 14th, 2008. The government passed the necessary legislation that facilitated the postponement because it was argued that more time was needed for the local government reform process to take place.

The councillors and aldermen sworn in are: Jennel Young, Denise Aleong, Joel London, Wendell Stephen, Peter John, McDonald Morris, Murchison Brown, Neubun Clarke, Cynthia Piper, Janice Wallace-Henry, Noreen Holder and Francis Pau.

Councillor Peter John, who has represented the St. Anns River/Central Laventille area for over twenty years, and who was shot several times at his business place late last year took his oath of office and received loud applause from those gathered. A second attempt had been made on his life while he was warded at the Port of Spain General Hospital. No one has been charged up to this date.

The Mayor of Port of Spain, Murchison Brown, congratulated the team of councillors and aldermen for their work over the past four years. He declared that the ongoing projects must be made a priority so that they can be completed.

Murchison Brown also welcomed on board thirty-one new police officers who were assigned to the borough. He said that there is no more room for excuses, and highlighted that there is a need for a greater police presence at the Central Port of Spain Market. Remarking that Parliament usually takes precedence over the City Council, he closed by inviting the media to the Statutory Council meetings on the last Thursday of every month.
