The Inaugural Fashion Week Trinidad and Tobago (FWTT) 2008, themed, "Keeping the fashion industry alive in T&T", was launched with great flair and style on the Zen Rooftop, Port of Spain, last Saturday 17th May, 2008. The thirty-five models selected for the launch were introduced to the audience who included many of the designers who will be participating in the week long fashion fiesta. Fashion Week 2008 will feature top and upcoming designers not only from Trinidad and Tobago, but also from the wider Caribbean. It starts on Monday 26th May at the Adam Smith Square and continues to Saturday with the COLOUR SHOCK grande finale.

The organizers briefly spoke with Triniview.com to explain the rationale behind the Fashion Week. Dianne Hunte expressed that Trinidad and Tobago is a developing nation and needs something to take us forward. She said that the organizers are, "...trying to push our identity as a region and stimulate people into supporting Caribbean fashion." This Caribbean identity, she remarked, is reflected in the relaxed, colourful and trendy clothes that have been created by experienced and upcoming designers. Additionally, Rosemary Stone expressed that the organizers are trying to convey the seriousness of fashion by demonstrating that it is a viable industry. According to Rosemary, Trinidadians need to get over the notion that everything foreign is better, and embrace the local fashion designers.

Richard Young, who is always prominent in front and behind the fashion scene, introduced the models to the audience. He remarked that Trinidadians are a creative people and we should tap into this creativity, not just at Carnival time, but all year round. Dressed in black, the models strutted their stuff on the Zen Rooftop as they gave the audience a taste of the poise, confidence and professionalism that onlookers can expect at Fashion Week. Among the models were three national footballers: Jason Marcano, Lester Peltier and Atulla Guerra.

Trinidad and Tobago Designers
TriniView.com spoke briefly with one of the designers, Rodney Alexander who, despite his youthful looks, has been designing for thirteen years. Describing his designs as a mix between the indigenous and contemporary, Rodney sees his artistic and abstract designs as an expression of his search for awareness. Having just opened a store on Eastern Main Road, Curepe, he spoke of his excitement in participating in Fashion Week as it is an opportunity for him to showcase his designs.

It was a very relaxed launch, as the models posed for pictures, mingled and interacted with the many designers in attendance. Given the enthusiasm shown by the models, designers and organisers, the public can look forward to a spectacular Fashion Week 2008.
