The Professsional and Amateur Dance Association of Trinidad and Tobago (P.A.D.A.T.T.) held their first annual Medallist Competition and Dance, Sunday 4th May, 2008, at the Trinity East Auditorium in Trincity. Hundreds of finely attired dance enthusiasts and guests were on hand to take in the fantastic evening of dance where dancers from several dance schools competed in several categories. The organizers need to be highly commended for their organizational efforts, especially in the area of their punctual start.

Ken Wilson, president of PADATT, in a brief interview shared that over the last ten years, the association has done over 3,500 medal tests and thus thought it necessary to have an event to bring all these dancers together. According to him, ballroom dancing is a great social skill to learn as it encourages poise and builds self-esteem. As such, he highlighted PADATT's intention to introduce ballroom dancing in primary and secondary schools throughout Trinidad and Tobago. Similarly, Lydia Charles shared that the organisation is trying to get Trinidad and Tobago involved in dance as she too highlighted the many benefits of ballroom dancing.

Contestants competed using several dance styles including Rhumba, Merengue, Salsa, Heel and Toe, Waltz, Jive, Tango and Cha Cha Cha. The panel of judges assessed the dancers based on correct timing, neat and correct footwork, upright pose, interpretation of moves, soft movement and style. Two professional judges, Leon Greaves and Livingstone Alleyne from the Barbados Dance Council, assisted with the judging procedures.

From the start, the competition was very exciting as very young dancers in the junior categories demonstrated their budding skills to the delight of the audience. As the categories shifted to the adult ones, under the headings of Ballroom, Latin, and Club, the couples lit up the ballroom with their energy and deft moves. The skill and grace of the dancers were evident as they twirled on the dance floor to great appreciation and the occasional burst of applause from the audience.

The evening was also flavoured by a very energetic and clinical display of Salsa dancing by Kirt Charles and Carol Boissiere. There was also another guest performance by La Shauna Mc Lean who delighted the audience with her impressive belly dancing routine.

When the results were announced in the various categories, it was the Footlight Dance Studio who was awarded the Challenge Cup, having secured the most victories, edging Modern Ballroom Dance Class and Dance Ensemble into second and third place respectively. The winners of the categories were presented with the prizes as the audience eagerly awaited their chance to step on the dance floor. When all the results were announced it was dancing time, as members of the audience as well as competitors took to the dance floor, transforming it into a sea of movement. Swirling couples gracefully stepped and dipped to the soothing music.
