The Community-based Environmental Protection and Enhancement Programme (CEPEP) held its first ever graduation for the participants of its three week Training and Development Programme. The training and development modules included Life Skills, Anger Management, Conflict Resolution, Parenting and Personal Development. The theme of the graduation was "Securing our Future" and hundreds of well-dressed graduates from various CEPEP companies around Trinidad and Tobago gathered at the CEPEP Learning Institute for the ceremony.
Kwesi Atiba, Executive Manager of Corporate Services addressed the graduates, telling them that they are being taken along a road that will better Trinidad and Tobago. He, however, cautioned that for those who are given special tools, it becomes more incumbent on them to be involved in the building of the nation of Trinidad and Tobago. As a facilitator in the programme, he said that his involvement was very special to him and he urged the graduates to put into practice what they had learned.
Dylis McDonald, Executive Manager of CEPEP, spoke deeper into the details of the programme, sharing that thus far it has involved 1500 employees from about 42 CEPEP companies. She said that many have expressed their desire to engage in further beneficial activities including catering, planning and computer literacy. She then invited the valedictorian, Roger Abraham from Pical Services on stage to give some remarks and he briefly expressed his deep gratitude for being part of the CEPEP Training Programme.
Ray M.S. Brathwaite, Executive Chairman of SWMCOL expressed his delight at the large turn out of well-dressed graduates. He stated that CEPEP is five years old and said that it has been a unique journey. He declared the hard work and diligence of CEPEP workers has convinced Trinidad and Tobago that CEPEP is here to stay, and urged the graduates to continue to make the country the very best that it can be. He said that he has often asked himself, "What would this country be without CEPEP?" and proceeded to lead the audience in singing a modified version of the popular song "Never Get Weary Yet".
Acting Minister for Utilities and the Environment, Christine Sahadeo gave the feature address and told the graduates the country appreciates the work being done by CEPEP, especially as it is now rainy season. She explained that the vision for CEPEP involves encouraging persons to use the initial contracts to move forward and become full-fledged, self-sufficient business entities. She said that as part of this mandate, training and development is a critical part of the CEPEP programme and is the only way out of poverty. Sahadeo further stated that in today's world, one must be multi-skilled and with the economy as vibrant and progressive as it is, the time to develop entrepreneurial enterprises is now. She declared that Trinidad and Tobago is a land of opportunity and that there is a level playing field. Using her own life as an example, she said that no longer can we say those who have will make it, and those who don't have won't. Minister Sahadeo closed by congratulating those who had taken part in the CEPEP Training Programme.
Programme Coordinator, Marlon Bascombe, presented to representatives from the various CEPEP companies the certificates of their employees who had participated in the training programme. Following this, the graduands were served with refreshments and photographs were taken according to the various companies. The graduates for the graduation were from Pical Services Ltd., Miracle Brite Maintenance Company, Jaisuree Enterprises Ltd., A.E. Rasolli Maintenance Services Ltd., R.J.S.D.C. Company, Marryshow Maintenance Services Ltd., Fabcom Ltd., Danavin Company Ltd., Thomas Loney Maintenance Ltd., Diyva Enviro Ltd., Foster Solutions for Sustainable Ecosystem Development Ltd. and Real Maintenance Services Ltd. Plans are currently underway to expose the 6000 CEPEP workers all over Trinidad and Tobago to similar training.
