For those who exist outside of the 'dance circles' it would have been a great experience to venture to the 43rd Annual Independence Queen of the Ball and Dance Competitions and experience the wonder that is dancing. A mixture of old and young were gathered to dance the night away... and so they did, dressed up in their best 'Dan Dan' and all.

The 43rd Annual Independence Queen of the Ball and Dance Competitions took place on Thursday 24th August, 2006 to an enthusiastic audience at the SWWTU Hall. In spite of the very heavy showers many still came out to support their families, friends and fellow dance classmates involved in these competitions. Others came out for the love of dancing and to once again witness the parade of Independence gowns in the national colours of red, white and black.

This competition, the brainchild of veteran dancer, Junior Regis, was produced along with the Port Workers and Family Welfare Movement and has been in existence for the past 43 years.

Holly Betaudier, more familiarly known as Holly B, and co-host Holly Betaudier Jr. as well as Miss Philomena Duncan were the hosts for the night.

Following the rendition of the National Anthem by MC Miss Philomena Duncan and an invocation by Miss Jody Isaac, Carl Edwards of the Ballroom Association of Trinidad and Tobago addressed those who had made their annual pilgrimage to witness this show.

Guest artiste, Julia Edward Dance Troupe, spiced up the occasion with their saucy dance routine before the start of the formal leg of the ceremony ensued.

The first of the competitions - the Independence Queen of the Ball Competition - showcased women in their Independence gowns designed by talented and creative fashion designers. These designers were required to interpret the colors of the National Flag: red, white and black into various outfits. They left the audience spellbound, excited and hungry for more. Some of the ladies even shook a leg or two during their appearances on stage which proved quite entertaining for the audience.

After the intermission was the Ballroom and Line Dance Competitions. The dancers competed in the following dances: Foxtrot, Bolero, Calypso, Cha Cha Cha and the Bounce. Before each competition there was a demonstration of the particular dance, followed by the couples doing their best to present their interpretations of the various dances.

There were roars of approval from various sections of the audience as the dancers performed either because of a well executed dance step or from seeing a fellow dance classmate on the dance floor. This added to the exciting atmosphere that was at the competition throughout the night.
