St.Agnes Church

| show fullshow summary

The good old St. Agnes Church. The church where I was Baptized and Confirmed. The church where Rev. Buxo and Nurse taught us cathesism. When Harvest time came around all the students from Franklin would past from the back of the school to the side entrance of the church. Where the great pipe organ would rumble before the commencement of the Hymns. Where the pigeons were always on the roof. Where religously my brothers, sister and I would attend every Sunday morning and where to this day I can remember most of the hymns from the common prayer book...word for word. My youngest sister tells me the bell no longer tolls...sad for it helped us know what time it was for the services and when the funerals were about to leave and walk on the main road. before going down Nizam street. Yes Sir, St. Agnes Church was an essential part of the daily life of all Anglicans who resided in St James in the 50's and sixties. It takes a village to mold and raise a child and St. Agnes played it's part in my life and many others. I hope the bell would one day start tolling again summoning a new and invigorated call to the young to get back to simple basics.

St. James...the street and place made me whi I am

| show fullshow summary

I was born at the Corner of calcutta Street and the Western Main Road in St James. I lived there for the first fourteen years of my leife before I moved to Carenage. St James, the place that never sleeps. The home of Hosay, all the great steelbands of yesteryear....North Stars, Synphonets, Crossfire, Tropoli, Sun Valley and Blue Stars (now calle T & Tec Power stars). The home of the Dog roti; the home of Rialto theatre where I saw all the Tazan and old western movies, all the Dracula movies and all the serial movies. Eggie would close the shutters and you know the movie was about to start. St James, the home of the Jc bottling factory at the corner of Long Circular and the western main Road. The home of Din Din (opposite Calcutta street) and the barracks (not the police barracks but the tattered house at the corner of Calcutta street where "bounce" mother sold corn and also the Barnetts whose mother also sold corn. The home of girl and boy school. The home of the first two pedestrian traffic lights ...

The home of girl and boy school. The home of the first two pedestrian traffic lights installed in the late fifties or early sisties. The tram car on Long Circular road where Long Tennis was played. the home of the billiards opposite Delhi Street. The home of one of the first central schools built after the days of Exhibition exam and the introduction of the Common Entrance. Bunny Dwarika went there and I went to Tranquillity Intermediate. I have fond memories indeed. The place where pitching marble and flying kite in Pompeii savannah (now King George the 5th) was de norm. Big Bridge with all de warbeen we ketch. That was the day of children growing as children......not any more.

The good old Franklin School

The houses of the school were in 1962-'63...Buxo, Sweet, Streetly and Franklin. This is the school I went to after leaving teacher Van. Bunny Dwarika, the Ramdeens. Wayne Kadaran:the strongs,Kenrick and Michael Stephens whose father made my first First communion pants. Teachers, Mr. Matthews, Ms HarryPaul, Mr. Griffith and the Head Master, Mr. Woodruff whose wife played the Piano every morning to sign the Hymns. This school nurtured my religious and social habits. All the hymns I rememember today and all those West Indian poems were taught from St. Agnes.
