The Spaniards had named it 'Rio Guapo'; later on they called the entire region 'Guapo' after dividing the island into what they termed "partidas". Guapo means beautiful or majestic.

The headland, which was part of the grant to Fortine was named 'Punta del Guapo' after the river laying to its north-west.

Point Fortin got its name from a Frenchman planter by the name of ‘Fortine’. The name is now spelt “Fortin”. He came to Trinidad in 1783 and received a grant of land in the area that carries his name.
