Roots at Forty

On Saturday 9th January, 2016, loyal supporters of the band formerly known as Charlie’s Roots and the Rapso band 3Canal joined Soca music giant, Pelham Goddard and Roots, in celebrating their fortieth anniversary in the music business. This event, themed “Roots at Forty: Their Carnival Story”, was produced by JVMP (Junior, Vonrick, Malcolm, Pelham) Promotions in collaboration with Hotel Normandie. It was held Under the Trees at Hotel Normandie, St. Ann’s Port of Spain, from 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. The artistes featured included David Michael Rudder, Roger George, 3Canal, Moricia Cagan and Nigel O’Connor.

TUCO Calypso Gala 2015

On Thursday 29th October, 2015, the Globe cinema, located on the corner of Park and St. Vincent streets, Port of Spain, was teeming with calypsonians both young and old, musicians, their guests and lovers of the calypso art-form for the TUCO Calypso Gala 2015.

TUCO/WESCU Karaoke Competition 2014

The NU Pub, formerly the Mas Camp Pub, was alight with excitement on November 14th 2014, for the TUCO/WESCU first National Karaoke Competition. The audience comprised friends and family of contestants, members and supporters of Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Association (TUCO) and members of TUCO’s executive.

The Launch of “The Roots of Jazz”

Pelham Goddard, music stalwart and leader of “Pelham Goddard and Roots” recently formed a five piece Jazz ensemble which comprise of Vonrick Maynard the drummer, Oslyn Pompie the bass player, Devon Ocho the guitarist, Pelham Goddard on piano and Malcolm Boyce on the saxophone. The band also include vocalists Moricia Cagan and Nigel O’Connor.

Remembering JaJah Onilu

Trinidad and Tobago lost one of its musical pioneers with the death of percussionist Ja Jah Oga Onilu who died suddenly at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope last Friday night. Known as a master drummer, Onilu, who was 58-years-old at his passing, was also a well known artist and maker of “organic” musical instruments. He was also one of the members of Jewels of Nature organic percussion group along with his two sons Baba Onilu and Modupe Onilu.

Departed Calypso icon the Mighty Duke (Kelvin Pope) got a true Kaiso send off in his home town of Point Fortin on Thursday 22nd January, 2009, at Coronation Park. Duke’s family, including his wife Rebecca and his children Wendell, Makeda, Kurt and Ossasie, friends as well as many members of the Calypso fraternity, were on hand to celebrate the life and times of the Mighty Duke.
