The Ramleela Celebration Told by Pundit Ravi Maraj

The Ramleela celebration really has its genesis taken straight out from the Holy Scripture, the Ramayana. It is set in an age called Treta Yuga. Of course, in Hinduism… in the Hindu traditions we have four ages. We have the Satya Age which is the Golden Age, we have the Dwapara, we have Treta Yuga and we have Kali Yuga, in that order.

Mc Bean Ramleela and Cultural Group celebrates Ramleela

The Mc Bean Ramleela and Cultural Group successfully hosted their Ramleela Celebrations on the same compound of the Lower Mc Bean, Couva Hindu Mandir. The celebrations was held over a period of several nights and culminated on Saturday 3rd October, 2009 with an exciting finale that was well attended. The climax of the evening was the burning of the effigy of Ravana symbolizing the Hindu demon, King Ravan which stood 30 feet high off the ground at one end of the large open air space that was also adorned with other props that were used in the play.

Muslim Wedding in Princes Town

S.A.C.O. Musical Concert ‘Classical Mania’

The St. Augustine Chamber Orchestra (S.A.C.O.) recently held their grand musical concert ‘Classical Mania’ featuring the Trinidad and Tobago Youth Philharmonic (TTYP) at the Queen’s Hall in Port of Spain on 22nd and 23rd August, 2009, before a large and appreciative audience. The concert was a culmination of a three week workshop held by SACO with assistance from teachers and musicians from Venezuela’s FESNOJIV (The State Foundation for National System of Youth Orchestras and Choirs) where over 250 young musicians ages 4-25 participated. The students were taught wind, brass, string and percussion instruments.

On Sunday, August 9th, 2009, when the triple-decked Treasure Queen cruise vessel pulled out from the Pier 2 dock in Chaguaramas and sailed into the open sea, it was no ordinary boat ride. The occasion was the organized and well-attended cruise party hosted by 3 of Us International – Dollar, Super & Brown Eyes.

Fashion Week Trinidad and Tobago 2009

It was hungry cameras, flashing lights, and a dazzling array of colour, glitz and glamour as the second annual Trinidad and Tobago Fashion Week came off from May 29th to June 2nd 2009, at the Hyatt Regency in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Organised by a team that included Richard Young, Diane Hunte, Rosemary Stone, Alyson Brown, and personnel from the Fuse Agency, the show featured both veteran and upcoming designers showcasing their creations over the five night show. This year’s show took an environmental focus with the theme ‘The Green Revolution: Live Green’ and all the five nights had a related sub-theme.

Fondes Amandes Gayap 2009

The Fondes Amandes Community Reforestation Project (FACRP) hosted their 13th annual Gayap (which means to lend hands) in St. Ann’s Fondes Amandes hills on Friday 20th March, 2009. Geared towards school children, the Gayap involved sensitization towards environment and agriculture and a hands-on tour of the Fondes Amandes project where schools participated in agricultural and environmental activities. Members of the FACRP shared their knowledge and experience with the youngsters ensuring another successful Gayap event.

2008 Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards

There was little surprise as Olympic double medalist Richard Thompson and the late, undefeated boxer Jizelle Salandy copped the prestigious 45th Annual Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards held at Queen’s Hall, Port of Spain on March 25th, 2009. In this ceremony organised by the First Citizens Bank Sports Foundation, top sporting personalities from various sporting disciplines were recognized for their 2008 achievements.

Jazz Artists on the Greens 2009

The 7th Annual Jazz on the Greens Festival came off on 29th March 2009, at the Center for Creative and Festival Arts in St. Augustine. Organised by Production One Ltd, the show featured an exciting cast of performers who delighted the audience who sat on mats and chairs on the grass in front of the stage.

LENCO’s 2008 Christmas Concert

On Sunday December 14, 2008, the Laventille Empowerment Networking Committee (LENCO) hosted a Christmas Concert at the St. Paul Street Sport Complex, Laventille, for over five hundred children between the ages of one and twelve as well as for senior citizens from Laventille and its environs. The Laventille Empowerment Networking Committee (LENCO) comprises a network of Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) from the upper Laventille area.
